New Zealand’s Ecological Haven: The diverse fauna of Poronui Lodge

It’s no secret that Aotearoa New Zealand is world-renowned for its unique fauna. Nestled within the breathtaking Taharua Ranges, Poronui Lodge and its surrounding wilderness is a haven for an array of species.

From the plethora of birdlife soaring high over the rugged hills, to the many hunting animals and cattle that roam the backcountry and farmland, fauna is at the heart of what makes Poronui so special.

Sheltered within the 16,000 acres of diverse native forest, Poronui Lodge allows guests to celebrate our fauna by choosing an escape fit for their interests. Let’s take a look at some of the wildlife you might come across on your stay at the lodge or when partaking in one of the many experiences available.

Hunting and fishing fauna

Whether you are a beginner or experienced in the time-honoured practice of deer hunting, traversing the scrub-laden hills of Poronui in the hunt for the North Island’s Red, Sika, Fallow or Rusa deer will satisfy all.

While tackling the rugged terrain, it is likely that you will also encounter wild goats, Arapawa rams, and our pheasants (popular among those interested in a Pheasant drive). Even though people do not come to Poronui to hunt wild boars, there is always the chance you may cross the path of one within the backcountry. And, of course, one can’t forget the unmissable experience of wading through the gin-clear and shallow rivers to catch and release quality brown and rainbow trout.

Non-hunting fauna

For non-hunters alike, the fauna at Poronui is more than plentiful. Whether you choose to partake in our active experiences such as horse-riding, mountain-biking, hiking through one of our many available trails, or simply take it all in from the luxury of the Lodge while enjoying some of our culinary delights, you are more than likely to come across our cherished native birds, magpies warbling in the morning air, and the sheep farmed at Poronui.

Spotting feathered beauties

Keep your eyes peeled to spot some of New Zealand’s renowned birdlife at the lodge. The 6,000 acres of native beech forest is a haven for endangered species such as the majestic native bush falcon. Having escaped from the chaos of civilisation, you might also catch the entrancing songs of some of our native treasures, including the tui, bellbird (korimako), morepork (ruru), native wood pigeon (kereru), hawks, falcons, and sometimes – if you are really lucky – blue duck (whio) or the rare and iconic kiwi.
