Round the corner past our horse stables at Poronui, head through the secure gates, and you’ll probably hear the rhythmic crack of shotguns echoing through the air.
The clay target or skeet shooting range is in use, and eager guests are engaged in a challenging and exhilarating test of skill against a stunning New Zealand backdrop. Popular with guests of all abilities, and a great group experience, clay target shooting at Poronui really is a blast.
For those new to firearms, clay target shooting provides a safe and controlled environment to gain confidence and learn the basics. Non-hunting partners often find particular enjoyment in mastering this skill, often discovering a newfound appreciation for the sport. For shooting guests, it’s a chance to showcase a hunter’s hand-eye coordination, speed, and ability to work with moving targets.
Once guests have received ear defenders and protective eyewear to use, the shooting can begin. The skeet shooting area is tucked into a small hollow, providing a safe place for firearms use. Multiple clay target launchers are placed around the cove, and hunting huts for recreating a fowl shoot.
As the day progresses, each guest in a group is offered the chance to try their hand, getting the feel for the shotgun kick and hitting a target as it arcs across the sky.

Some are easy, like balancing front and back legs for the correct posture. A well-executed shot that clips the front of the target explodes in the air, getting shouts of approval from the party.
For those struggling with a double, he offers a playful challenge: “You’ve just got to skip the first and shoot the second shot first!”
Skeet shooting is just as fun for novices as it is for seasoned shooters. Not only is it great on its own, it’s also a chance for those who plan on participating in a pheasant drive to test their skill and build some camaraderie before the big day.
